As was presented at the AGM, to carryout our duties within the objects of the Mandal and as required by Charities Act of the Mandal will this year be partnering with a local charity and a charity in Gujarat to support them as part of our objectives as a Charity Organization.

The local charity that we will be working with is the Calgary Dream Centre where they integrate the disadvantaged of Calgary back into our community as productive members. This is achieved through the provision of educational and residential care. The Calgary Dream Centre exists to help people to restore dignity, discover destiny, and realize their dreams. This is accomplished by engaging people in life management skill training, career skills development, spiritual care and integration into society as productive citizens. The Mandal will be actively supporting the Dream Centre with regular volunteering and collecting donations on their behalf. To this end all Mandal events entry will be by donation of non-perishables. For free events the donation will be enforced. More information will be provided shortly.

The Gujarat charity that has been identified by the Mandal is Muni Seva Ashram in Goraj near Vadodra. The clothes that the Mandal members donated last year are being sent to the Muni Ashram. Muni Ashram have extended their assistance to clear customs and distribute to the under previledged in Gujarat.

It's the big story. A village woman with 7th grade education goes to the Ramakrishna Mission to become a nun; they reject her because she doesn't have a college education. So she finds another teacher, who has been in silence for 12 years. He instructs her to serve the world. Without any money, without any house, without any other resources, she builds a hut on a wasteland and invites a few village kids to play everyday. That woman was Anuben Thakkar, that year was 1978, that project was called Muni Seva Ashram. Twenty five years later, Muni Seva Ashram is a 300 acre social service project that is known throughout Asia.

That's definitely a big story. But there's an even bigger story that is so small that it almost can't be seen. It is the story of Vikram Patel, a young doctor who comes to Anuben's hut just as she is starting the Muni Seva Ashram. As a medical school student, he agrees to come every Sunday to do health checks on the kids that come to Anuben's hut. The rest is history.

Read the full story of the journey of a man that is going to honour the Mandal from 2 to 4pm on Sunday, May 1st at Indo Canadian Centre, 826 Edmonton Trail NE followed by Tea and Snacks. A presentation is going to be made of the Muni Seva Ashram and It is the Mandal’s earnest request for all members to come and support this noble cause.

Donations are accepted on the Mandal website as well as at the event. Please register online so that we can make adequate arrangements.

"Our bottom line is joy. We are here to share our joy in the world," Vikrambhai Patel

MATAJI ALTAR Mansukhbhai and Kokilaben Dattani, over many years have been hosting Mataji's sthapna at their residence and as has been the tradition they will arrange the Mataji's altar at all venues. To avoid any confusion at the venues they have been given clear instructions on how this is to be managed and will therefore not be taking direction from any members at the venue.

SPONSORSHIPS There are many opportunities for sponsorships as well as setting up a stand at the Navratri venues. Members are also welcome to sponsor for hall rental, prasad, snacks, or just any donation towards the celebration. Please refer to the sponsorship information on home page of the Mandal website.

PRASAD Since we are expecting much larger attendances throughout the Navratri, we are now requesting for all those that are interested in providing Prasad to do so by Prasad donation money. This can be done so by writing a cheque to the Mandal.

AARTI Once again this year we are encouraging as many of the members as possible to come with their own aarti plates for a chance to enter the best decorated aarti competition. Prizes will be awarded on Sharad Purnima night. All those that wish to bring their own aarti are requested to look after their own aarti plates and take them away from the central altar once the aarti and competition is finished. Mandal shall not take any responsibility for aarti plates left behind.

BEST GUJARTI CONTUME Every year we encourage all members to come dressed i n their traditional folk Gujarati costumes. This year we will be awarding prizes to best dressed man, woman, senior man, senior woman, boy and girl. So please come and show off your best chania chori, sari, kurta pyjama, dhoti kurta or whatever traditional costumes you wish to adorn.

MATAJI NI CHUNDNI For those who would like to bring saris for mataji, they are requested to staple labels on them with a contact name (person to pick up), phone and date (latest by Dashera) when it will be picked up so that we can track them properly and return them you.

DANDIA Dandia's shall be available for sale for $5 per pair at the venues on a first come first serve basis.

HOUSE KEEPING The Mandal goes to considerable length to ensure that we leave behind the facilities in the same order that we found it. It is the responsibility of all members to treat the rented property with the same respect as your own property. Any damage or leaving the facility in an unclean manner only makes it more difficult for us to continue to rent some of these facilities.

CLOTHES DONATIONS As we all dress up in our best and wear clothes let us all think about the unfortunate and make a donation of the clothes that you no longer require. We will be setting up a donations counter fo r collecting clothes. We request that the clothes are laundered clean and that they are properly folded and packed in a plastic bag. The Mandal is looking into the logistics of transporting these clothes back to Gujarat to donate to the less fortunate.

FOOD BANK Whilst we think about those less fortunate back home let us also think about those less fortunate amongst our us right here in Calgary. A food bank counter will be set up for non-perishable donations. We encourage all to bring atleast one food item per night. The collected food donations will be greatly appreciated by the food banks in Calgary.

SECURITY We are expecting unprecedented attendance this year and have thus made arrangements to ensure that there is complete order and discipline at all times. Strict security control will be enforced and any unruly manner shall not be tolerated. Security has been given instructions to guide all those that do not obey the rules to leave the premises imme diately. We would especially like to caution the children that run around the halls with complete disregard to theirs and others safety. If they are found to disobey the rules, the security shall guide them and accompanied by their parents out of the venues with immediate effect.

In my remarks at the successful Diwali Dinner Dance on November 5th, I had stated that the Mandal primarily has two seasons. The six month event season from May to October and the six month non-event season from November to April. Going forward it is important that we spread these events in such a way that the entire year is active. To keep that momentum going, the Mandal is going to start the Friday social program starting in December. Every first Friday of the month will be our social Friday at the Indo Canadian Centre, 826 Edmonton Trail NE. Following are the dates for the rest of the Social Friday events: December 2nd January 6th February 3rd March 2nd April 6th May 4th There will be a nominal entrance fee and food shall be provided.
